Furring Channel
A furring channel (also known as a hat channel) is a metal framing component used in ceiling suspension systems. It is typically made of galvanized steel and has a hat-like cross-section.
- Shape: Resembles a top hat, with a flat web and flanged sides.
- Material: Usually galvanized steel for corrosion resistance.
- Leveling Uneven Surfaces: Installed perpendicular to ceiling joists to create a flat plane for drywall or other finishes.
- Soundproofing & Insulation: Provides space for acoustic insulation or resilient bars to reduce noise transfer.
- Dropped Ceiling Support: Used as secondary framing to suspend ceilings below structural slabs.
- Ventilation & Concealed Services: Creates a cavity for electrical wiring, HVAC ducts, or plumbing.
Furring channels are secured with clips, screws, or wires, making them a versatile choice for both commercial and residential ceiling installations.
